Sunday 21st of July 2019

Although the Bride to be wasn’t the only one with some big news, Oldcastle Agricultural Show Chairman John McEnroe told the large crowd, in Owenie Traynor’s Pub, that the Tully Twins from Gogglebox would be the special guests at this year’ show.  “We look forward to seeing everyone in Gilson Park on Sunday 16th July,” he said.

There was love in the air at the launch of the 78th Oldcastle Agricultural Show as local businesswoman Laura Kevin announced her engagement. The owner of Tresses Hair Salon revealed that her Fiancé Graham got down on one knee during their recent trip to New York City.

But that’s not the only surprise that the committee have in store for the big day, this year the Road Safety Authority Shuttle and Roll Car will be there along with the Macra Farm Skills Competition and The Midlands Regional Final of the Irish Shows Association Home Cook Competition.

Laura spent most of the night looking through the schedule once she heard that there was over €25,000 in prize money to be won. With nearly 400 classes to choose from in Cattle, Sheep, Horse, Poultry and Home Industry competitions there will be plenty of opportunities to win. The Oldcastle native says she is planning to enter as many classes as possible to pay for her dream wedding. She even started making enquiries about buying an animal for the Oldcastle All Ireland Final Young Beef Bullock Championship, which is sponsored by Carnaross Mart, and has a prize fund of over €1,500.

The popular Oldcastle Food Village will be making a return packed with even more Artisan Food Producers. And if you are looking for the gorgeous groom Graham, you’ll find him here glued to the cookery demonstrations by TV Chef, Chef Adrian, in the hope of picking up some new skills to impress his fabulous fianceé.

Although the blushing Bride was more than happy to share the limelight on Saturday night she insists that she won’t be having her hen party in the poultry tent despite her interest in seeing the Greatest Cock(rel) of Oldcastle Competition.

The loved up couple will be hoping to pick up some tips for their first dance at the FIRST EVER Jiving Competition which will be judged by dance teachers Mairead Gaffney and Craig Lovett (from the Lidl Trolleycam ad).

After leaving the dance floor the pair will walk down the aisle to cheer on the Oldcastle Agricultural Show Committee in the Tug O War contest. The reigning champions will be hoping to hold on to the John Hubble Perpetual Cup. So if you think your team has the strength, stamina and stubbornness to win email and get registered today!!!

The future Mr & Mrs Matthews will also have an opportunity to check out some bands ahead of their big day, as they sit back in the picnic area to watch former Glór Tíre contestant, Noel Briody, Eddie Quinn, Denver Blue and a host of other artists on the live music stage. The Oldcastle Line Dancers will also be strutting their stuff on the dance floor.

The Fashion Show will give the love birds a chance to see the trends for 2017. And if they are looking for a vintage car to get them to the church on time they will be able to find one in the Automobile Section and there will also be a range of old fashioned tractors and machinery.

The hairdresser will be able to sit back and enjoy the close shave at this year’s Sheep Shearing competition with shearers flocking to it from all over Ireland to compete in the Junior and Senior classes.

If Graham wants to stay out of the dog house, he will have to make sure he brings their beloved pooch to the Oldcastle Dog Show. As there are classes for every pet from a purebred to a mongrel with lots of great prizes and rosettes to be won.

Little Miss Oldcastle and the Young Bachelor of Oldcastle will also be crowned on the day.  And you wouldn't want to miss the the spectacular Birds of Prey which are flying into Oldcastle for the day.
